How Plastic Bags are Made
The production process
To produce plastic bags, a film encasement of the bag is created by using blown film extrusion, sheet extrusion, casting, or winding. The most common plastic bag fabrication process is the blown film extrusion, also referred to as tubular film extrusion.
During this process, the polymer resin is melted into a viscous liquid. It is then extruded through an annular slit die, which produces a thin-walled plastic tube. Cool air is then forced through the die’s center, ballooning out the plastic tube and causing a bubble to form. A high-speed air ring then quickly blows cool air onto the bubble.
After the material has cooled, it is then run through flattening rolls. Once it has been flattened, it can then be slit to create multiple sheets, which can be wound into reels or kept flat to treat the seams of the bag. Once this initial fabrication has been done, the bags can then be put through a secondary process, such as a flexo printing press, which can create printed poly mailers with you company’s logo. Seams are created by heat sealing the plastic.
Manufacturing considerations
When a company manufactures security plastic bags, they have to take many things into consideration, including the size, how it will be used, and what it will be made out of. There are generally two polymers that are used in the process: polyethylene and polypropylene. Sometimes, they can be made out of vinyl if they need to be stronger and are used for storage.
Multiple layers are often used in the creation of the plastic, and it’s possible to add color to the bag. Not only does it them make them unique, but it can add privacy to the contents of the bag. Color can also help to protect the contents inside from elements such as ultraviolet light.
